Remembered as the lion of the Mediterranean, Barbaros Hayreddin Pasa demonstrated striking seamanship as the great officer of the Ottoman navy in the early 16th century.
Born on Lesvos Island in modern Greece in 1478, Hayreddin Pasa’s original name was Khizr or Khidr. He was honoured as ‘Barbarossa’ because of his red beard. Ottoman Sultan Selim I addressed him the honorary name ‘Hayreddin’, which means ‘best of the faith’.
As the youngest of four siblings, he started trading ventures between Lesvos, Thessaloniki and Euboea of modern Greece with a ship that he had created.
His brother was acknowledged as Baba Oruc (Oruc the father) because he served Muslim refugees retreating from the Christian crusaders in Andalus. He crossed them to North Africa with his navy.
Hayreddin Pasa was sharp and intense as a youngster, though he tended to challenge his peers. At a young age, he was recognised for his agitator rhetoric. He was brave but cautious. He was strong-willed but with an intrinsic fighting instinct.
